Mark (TheCraftsmansPath.com) on August 4th, 2008

This weekend I spent some time upgrading the blogging software that is under the hood at The Craftsman’s Path to the latest version. I migrated the site to WordPress version 2.6. That change does not really show anything outwardly to the viewer but, it upgrades many of the tools a features behind the scenes that help to create the blog.

I also decided that it was time for a new look. So, as you can see I’ve updated the look and layout of the blog with a new theme. I think that this theme allows for a bit more flexibility and maybe better navigation of the site.

Let me know how you like it and of course, if you notice anything that is not working properly, let me know that too!

  1. Mark,

I *like* the new look very much – and congratulations on the trouble-free update to version 2.6!

  2. Hey Al,

Let’s just say I made it through the upgrade to version 2.6. I had a few issues with the database changing with respect to how Categories are handled and a couple of WordPress plugin updates but, in the end everything is working OK.

Thanks for the compliments on the new look!

  3. Looks great Mark. I have been getting the upgrade to the latest WordPress software message for some time now. To be honest, I’m just scared to do it. The “5 minute install” took almost all day when I stared my blog in the first place. I can’t bear the thought of going through that again. Glad you made it through. The payoff really shows.

  4. Eric,

Thanks for the compliments on the new look and for stopping by.

Actually, I could have changed the look of the blog without upgrading WordPress but, I had not updated since version 2.2.2 so, it was time.

I used the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately the database changed in the way it stores Categories between 2.2.2 and 2.6 so, I had some work to deal with that. Maybe if I had done the regular updates things would have been smoother. I guess the moral is not to wait too long!

Anyhow, please continue to stop by and comment.

  6. Mark,

I realy like the new look. I too have been hesitant to upgrade. You may have given me the impetus to get on with it.

  7. Shannon,

Give it a go. I can tell you what I know if you run into difficulty.
