Neil,

Yep, the crack had me wondering for a bit. After a few choice words and a few minutes away I had a plan of attack. The repair seems to have worked well.

The top and back are somewhere around .110"to .120" thick. However, the back is a bit stronger because it is Rosewood. The top is Spruce and more flexible (and fragile) by design. It definitely broke at the pre-joined seam between the two top plates though. In retrospect, I'm glad that was the case because if the wood had cracked I may not have been able to repair it.

We'll see what I can do for a demo on the guitar when it's finished. I have not played regularly in quite a while!

Al,

Thanks for stopping by.

The crack in the top was a bit nerve-racking, but it looks like I was able to recover...gives me newfound respect for the thinness of the spruce top! It's definitely a different brand of woodworking from furniture.

Stay with me on this...it should be a fun journey.

Hey Mark...............that must have been scary at first. How thick are the top and bottom pieces of the guitar???

I'm with David.........and expecting a little audio try-out. I'm not expecting August Rush. :)

Fun to see this..............Neil

Thanks for this update, Mark! And to think I almost missed it.

Wonderful recovery from the crack in the joint. Great attention to all details. I have learned much from this, and the previous post - and I see so many reminders about how different from "flat work" it is to make musical instruments.

You have made GREAT progress, Mark. Thanks again!

David,

Thanks for your nice comments.

You are right, there is definitely new set of skills and techniques to acquire with lutherie. However, basic fundamental woodworking skills still apply for the foundation of what I am doing.

I am learning a lot though and it's a fun project.

Mark -

This is a fascinating project to follow, and one of the reasons I like your site so much. You have so much diversity to offer. I like how you have effortlessly moved from the challenge of a Queen Anne piece to the skill set of the luthier. I am looking forward to a video or sound clip of you playing the guitar.
